What i’ve done today was mostly applying what i’ve read last night about glass plate conditioning, especially about removing the silver mirror deposit on the emulsion. Basically, the recommended course of action is either to try rubbing it off but there’s a big risk of damaging the gelatine or to gently using saliva (yes, no kidding) and finish cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol). I’ve tried the second solution and it worked. Then i tried to skip the saliva part and it worked too — the silver mirror glazing disappeared almost completely. Here’s the pics:
- The plate as it comes from its enclosure
- Glass cleaned
- Silver mirror removed with isopropyl alcohol
- Gaps in emulsion filled up with silicone oil
- A bit of Photoshop too
Or, if you prefer, the whole clean-up process in one BIG gif:
